How to get to Saihoji Temple:

Saihoji temple is hard to find for a foreigner who does not speak Japanese. Those of you who would like to visit Dr. Usui’s memorial please give me a call upon your arrival at Tokyo and we will guide you there.

How to get to Mount Kurama:

Mount Kurama, where Dr. Usui had his mystique experience out of which the Reiki System was born, is located in the North of Kyoto and you can find it on every large tourist map of the area.

Information on accommodation in Kyoto can be obtained from the Kyoto Tourist Bureau or any large travel agent abroad. Travel in Japan can be quite strenuous at times, since not many Japanese speak English well enough to communicate with foreigners. There still is a deep cultural gap between East and West to be felt here.

However Kyoto seems to be one of the easier places to travel in for foreigners. Many of the street signs as well as the subway stop signs are written in both Japanese and English. The easiest way to reach Kyoto is by arriving at Kansai International Airport (Osaka) and then taking a train to Kyoto.

In case you are arriving from downtown Tokyo, take a Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo station to Kyoto via Nagoya. These trains depart every thirty minutes.

If you are arriving straight from Narita, the international airport outside of Tokyo, take an express train to Tokyo station and then proceed as described above. The train station in Narita is easy to find, there are big signs in the arrival hall. The train station is located below the airport.

The trip to Kyoto takes about three hours and is very pleasant, especially in a non smoking car with a reserved seat!

Once arrived at Kyoto Central Station make your way to Demachiyanagi Station. You can get there either by subway or by bus/taxi. From there you take a train on the Eizan Kurama Line and get off at the last stop, Kurama.

Follow the road uphill for about five minutes and you will reach the entrance of Kurama Temple. When you enter the temple grounds you are given an English pamphlet which includes a map of all the temples and shrines of the area as well as the philosophy of the Kurama Temple in English.

And then, enjoy every minute of exploring Dr. Usui’s sacred cedar forest...
