What is Reiki?

Reiki is the life force inherent in all beings, sentient and insentient. It permeates everyone and everything. Therefore anyone can learn how to direct energy consciously.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki is naturally emitted from the physical body of all beings. Learning Reiki first and foremost makes you aware of the energy flow and enables you to direct energy at will.

Can anyone learn Reiki?

Yes. Dr. Usui himself says in his Reiki handbook(see Reiki, the legacy of Dr. Usui") that anyone regardless of their age can learn Reiki.
I myself have even initiated my cat!

If you do initiate your children into Reiki I suggest that you do not show the symbols to children under age fourteen. This is just a precaution for the sake of the child. Not being able to share their knowledge with their friends can be a big burden for a child. Of course there are exceptions to prove the rule.

Who was the successor of Dr. Usui?

It is said that Dr. Usui incorporated the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, an organization whose first president he himself was, in 1922. After his death in 1926 he was succeeded by the following presidents of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai:
Mr.Ushida
Mr.Taketomi
Mr. Watanabe
Mr. Wanami
Mrs. Koyama
Mr. Kondo

What is the role of Chujiro Hayashi
in the Japanese Reiki movement?

Chujiro Hayashi was one of several high ranking Reiki students in the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai who had been give the teacher’s level. However he was not allowed to teach the master level to anyone. In teaching Mrs. Takata he went against the rule of the Gakkai. We don’t know when he left the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, but we do know for a fact that he did leave it. His style of Reiki, as he writes in his Reiki manual is called Hayashi Shiki Reiki- not Usui Reiki Ryoho!

What are Reiki symbols?

The Reiki symbols are tools to help us direct energy. Once you have learned to direct energy with the help of the symbols, I encourage you to let them go. After you have crossed the river you don’t need to carry the ferryboat on your shoulders for the rest of your life!

How many Reiki symbols are used in Japan?

The three symbols of the second degree. The master symbol is apparently used sparingly.

What happens in a Reiki initiation?

The initiation into Reiki reminds you in a both very subtle and very powerful way of your innermost energetic nature. It is not that the Reiki teacher opens your internal channel- this channel is open in each and every one of us already. If it were closed we would not be able to live.
Our greatest shortcoming is unawareness. And with the Reiki initiation our attention is drawn to the energetic aspects of consciousness. Take a moment to contemplate this and lets try out a little experiment: focus your attention on the tip of your nose for a few moments. You will suddenly feel it, as if it had not been there before! But the truth is that you were simply not aware of it before, it has been there as long as you are! The same is true for the energy that runs in our bodies: the moment we become aware of it, it begins to be felt.
The more attention we give it, the more we feel it. The more we feel it the more we connect to the energy that surrounds us. And in this circle of energy we realize the one-ness with all beings, sentient and insentient.

Remember that a Reiki initiation will not instantly turn you into a more spiritual being. Reiki is not a magic pill, you still have to do the work yourself. And enjoy it too!

What is the difference between
attunement and initiation?

An attunement is an individual energetic transfer of energy. Initiation refers to the whole process, including oral instructions. In the first Reiki degree for example, four attunements and the instructions for the use of Reiki make the initiation complete.
